Educational Visits help you Think Food and Farming. Fowlescombe is a mixed farm, which is certified organic with the Soil association, in the South Hams of Devon with pedigree cattle & sheep (traditional and rare breeds) along with a few rare breed goats and chickens. Our arable crops support our own livestock. Varied wildlife-rich habitats include woodland, ponds, streams, old pasture and hedges.

Facilities for visiting groups include a dedicated meeting room for up to 60 people, toilets, kitchen and a chance to sample produce from the farm. We have been running school visits since 2006 and children have particularly enjoyed meeting the show animals, sheep dog handling, pond dipping, scavenger hunting and feeding the chickens.

Visits vary from a few hours with a school or college, up to the ability to run some project over a period of weeks - see below for some ideas and use the menus under 'Educational Access' for other information.

Below the main room there is an extensive kitchen, entrance lobby and toilets. Outside the terraced garden can be used for an outside meal or just giving children a safe place to have a break.

For information for farmers and teachers about Health and Safety on a farm download this leaflet. We expect visitors to do their own risk assessments etc. We do have our own, and have procedures in place for things like E Coli - click here for useful article.

Fees and Charges

With many Educational visits there is no charge, as the owners are currently funded by Country Side Stewardship grants to do a certain number of visits of this nature each year. The organiser of a visit would have to fill in one or more short forms to tell the funding agency about their visit. Each evaluation form covers one group of 6 or more people for a session of 2 or more hours. We do ask that the form is filled in on the day, or within a couple of days of the visit. Click here for facilities, and for fees where funding does not apply, and for extras you might want to have.
