The Fowlescombe herd of Pedigree Aberdeen Angus

We run a closed herd of pure Aberdeen Angus Cattle on rolling hills in the South Hams of Devon. The animals are of a good temperament and our home-bred heifers have proved good calvers and milky dams. We have been showing cattle successfully since 2005 and have won the Gold Award from the Taste of the West for our Angus beef. The farm is certified organic with the Soil Association and we have a number of lovely organic heifers for sale.

Our stock bulls are allowed to run with their herds both on the pastures and in housing for as long as possible. Our first two stock bulls were Colmer Vagabond (from Galcantray Preditor) and Maplejacks Fergal (from Darlene Cruz 7C). Vagabond has given us so many fine daughters that he has moved to another herd, and we have a new young bull from Scotland called Haymount Evenstar (sired by Auchterforfar Don Star Y225 out of Essona of Haymount sired by Cardona Eagle). Evenstar got third place at the Devon County show in 2007 and one of our heifers came second against keen competition. We were delighted with both results but in particular with Evenstar since organic rules prevent intensive feeding of concentrates. His first calves were born in May 2007 - all easy calving to both cows and heifers.

We sell breeding stock off the farm, and normally have heifers, a few bulls and cows to sell. Our last TB test was passed successfully August 2008 - we are on annual testing. All cattle are vaccinated for Blue Tongue. Please ring Richard or Barbara on 01548 821000.

We sell our steers to two local butchers and to the prestigious Dovecote Park (Waitrose) scheme - we were highly ranked for the quality of our prime 100% Aberdeen Angus meat.

These animals are reared in traditional ways on our environmental estate. Most of the year the herd runs on species rich pastures. In the winter the animals are brought into well ventilated purpose built barns where they are fed a mixture of silage, haylage and hay - all produced on the farm. When in the sheds they also get a small amount of crimp - a feedstuff made on the farm from triticale or barley. Email by clicking the link
