Gussie dies

A sad loss, but a record life. Gussie, our oldest Hebridean ewe, died in September this year after a short illness. She had a good summer but when we were moving sheep one day I noticed she couldn't keep up with the others. She still had enough spirit to turn on the sheepdogs, fully justifying the name of dog-eater given her by the daughter of her original breeder. Far from being pushed around by the dogs, Gussie had been known to bite the odd dog! She had 27 lambs in her eleven years of lambing so there are plenty more sheep to carry on Gussie's line.

The photograph shows Gussie with her three lambs in 2002. They were well organised and waited to take their turn at feeding time.
This is one of Gussie's many daughters. She is called Pasque and can be seen here at the Kingsbridge Shown with her two lambs
