The Fowlescombe herd was nearly all sold off in a sale 20th Oct. 2011. It has Pedigree Devons, that sometimes were crossed with Angus. The pictures are of the herd a few weeks before the sale. We have just one Devon cow and her calf left, the rest being Angus. |

We had long wanted to have another top class breed of cattle which would thrive on our species rich pastures. We AI'd the Devon cows with semen from Tilbrooke and Forde Abbey sires, or ran them with our Angus stock bulls To ensure the Devons have good conformation without excess fat we have them on a tight regime, mixing straw in with silage when they are in housing, or leaving a small herd of Reds in the fields over winter and just feeding a couple of small bales of hay each day. An Angus X Devon makes an excellent carcass which we can sell either as Organic or as an Angus to Waitrose. This has given us an excellent return on investment. We have bred up a very nice young organic Devon bull who now covers some of the herd. |
