The Fowlescombe herd was nearly all sold off in a sale 20th Oct. 2011 due to illness in the family. The pictures are of the herd a few weeks before the sale. We retained 27 head of cattle - mainly older cows, some in calf cows and a couple of really nice ones we just could not give up

The herd was formed in 2000 by acquiring selected stock from the Almsworthy, Gogland and Bulleigh Park herds. Our first two stock bulls were Colmer Vagabond (by Galcantray Preditor) and Maplejacks Fergal (by Darlene Cruz 7C).

Following advice from Ron McHattie, we visited some of the most prestigious herds in Scotland and saw over 40 excellent bulls. My stockman and I had no doubts in choosing Haymount Evenstar (sired by Auchterforfar Don Star Y225 out of Essona of Haymount who was sired by Cardona Eagle). This fine bull has done his job proudly for five years and added a little length and height, and excellent conformation to his offspring, as we had hoped. Evenstar was our senior stock bull and it was with great sadness when he had to be put down at the end of Sept. 2011 after breaking a leg

Fowlescombe Pasteur was then our senior stock bull, sired by Fergal and with Vagabond as his grandsire. He commanded the highest price in our sale. Organic rules prevent intensive feeding of concentrates, so we have been particularly pleased with our results at livestock shows including some firsts, seconds and thirds at the Devon County Show. (We did not show any animals this year.) Evenstar's first calves were born in May 2007 and he has progressively slightly extended and raised the height of our herd, which is why we got him. This has given us excellent finishing stock and fine pedigree animals. We have had easy calving from all our bulls and sold a number of bulls to both beef and dairy farmers.

We finished most of our stock at grass, supplemented with a small amount of home-produced crimped grain in season. A few animals go to Well Hung Meat, Riverford and other local butchers but the majority went to the high-spec Dovecote Park (Waitrose) scheme.

We still have a handful of animals.

We are in the VLA Herdsure Scheme and are participating in the South West Healthy Livestock Initiative.
