Architecture and Design

Overview (click on links for other pictures and visit our award winning architects on their web site BACA)

The original estate was designed over many centuries by the Fowels, Kings and architects currently in fashion. We find it particularly interesting to see how the fields are laid out, paths to different (now) ruined buildings and how the spring flush of grass was created by a whole series of ponds down the valley. The old ruined mansion probably looked great in Mediaeval times, but in its last incarnation to my eye it was ruined by mock castelation

During restoration of the lodge and the farmhouse from 1999 we have used two architectural groups. The first is Harrison and Sutton from Totnes - in particular Chris Cunningham, Barry and Peter. This group did the Lodge, main house, stables and are now working on the bridge. The other group is my son, Robert, and a couple of his colleagues. Robert helped with the main house design as well, bringing the notion of the high hall, slot window, spiral staircase and the link in particular. He then did the landscape design for the main house, and with his friends is working on the old barn complex.

Robert runs an award winning architectural practice based in London - click here for details Below you can see an example of his work, our new greenhouse and pergola - a simulation of the final building

The farm buildings were designed by Richard, with help from ADAS, David, Trevor and others. Barbara specialised in the excellent kitchen that we now have. And Richard and Barbara have had a holistic guiding hand in all things

Between 2004 and 2006 Robert designed and supervised building a lovely barn conversion that was built by Haymans of Ivybridge. The work won the Master Builder award in its category. The finished work comprises a Visitors Centre and two 5 star self catering Holiday Cottages
