Moth evening, held down the track May 2003

This was a great place as there was an abundance of different types of trees under which the detectors could be placed. The lights are about 150 watts and give off a high UV light source, so it is best not to look at them directly. The lights are powered by small portable generators, and left on for about 2 hours. Overnight is better, but you tend to get 80% of what you will get in a couple of hours

A series of lights was put up the track and in an adjacent field

Below the light source is a couple of glass / plastic panels and then egg boxes are placed on which the moths settle

On a temporary basis the moths may be put in a tube for closer examination. All the moths are released at the end of the session

Not only moths are attracted - here we see mating cockchaffers

On the left we are checking the boxes - On the right, Rob is attracting bats, while his girl friend uses a bat detector
