The Fowlescombe Estate

Enjoy the estate: explore flower-rich pastures, bluebell woods, primrose lanes and wildlife ponds; encounter wildlife such as badgers, foxes, wild deer, hare, owls and buzzards. Meet the rare-breed and pedigree farm animals and experience aspects of our organic farming. ... more

Things you might like to join in with, depending on the season, include lambing, calving, sheepdog handling, and countryside skills such as stone walling and hedge laying. See our diary of farm events Fowlescombe lies in a hidden valley near the village of Ugborough in the South Hams of Devon. Spring-fed streams run through the steep-sided combes. High hedges, trees, ponds and small woodlands make it an idyllic spot to live and provide shelter for livestock and wildlife. The estate is famous for its historic ruins: the mansion inhabited by the Fowell family from medieval times, old hunting kennels, a tiny octagonal lodge fit for a hardy hermit. The farmhouse, entrance lodge, stone stables and old barns (dating back to about 1800) are now all fully renovated.

The ancient flower-rich pastures are grazed by both sheep and cattle to maintain their diversity so we keep native breeds: pedigree Aberdeen Angus and Irish Moiled Cattle and rare breeds of sheep. Our arable land also supports a rich variety of birds and mammals.

Fowlescombe is superbly situated for access to the wild and rugged splendour of Dartmoor National Park, yet within a few minutes of the South Devon coast. Click here for map. Within 2 miles we have two award-winning pub / restaurants. We are close to charming old towns such as Totnes, Salcombe, Ashburton and Kingsbridge and numerous excellent National Trust properties. The naval port of Plymouth and historic Exeter offer further cultural, dining and shopping facilities as well as major attractions such as the National Marine Aquarium. The farm gives you the opportunity to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the enchanting South Devon countryside with its rolling landscape and varied wildlife throughout all the seasons. Farm activities, especially with the animals (e.g. lambing), provide guests with memorable experiences.
